‘Travelling’ library of Charles I

Arabic prayer book

This Treasure is paired with: Arabic prayer book (Portable books)

These 60 books were bound as a set for the eight-year-old Prince Charles. Printed in several European cities from 1568 to 1608, they include history, poetry and drama, by classical and contemporary authors, in Latin, Italian, Greek and French. We do not know if this set had a box, or if the young prince read all the books. His brother Henry was given a similar collection of miniature books bound in green leather. Now dispersed, one volume was recently discovered in the Bodleian’s collections.

This Treasure isn’t currently on display in the Weston Library.
