John le Carré is the pen name of David Cornwell, who began writing his novels of espionage and betrayal while working for the British Secret Intelligence Service, MI6. Eight books feature the master spy George Smiley. This is an early draft of the fifth, where le Carré is still honing his description of Smiley, based partly on his old Oxford tutor Vivian Green. The traitor at the heart of the story is also based on a real-life character: the double-agent Kim Philby.
