Kelmscott Chaucer

This Treasure is paired with: Kelmscott Chaucer (Doctors of physic)

Gaddesden wrote this compilation of medical texts while studying at Oxford between 1307 and 1316. He has been suggested as a model for Chaucer’s ‘Doctour of phisik’, and is listed in the description of the Doctour alongside medical authorities including Hippocrates and Galen. This later manuscript of his medical and popular recipes was made for Gilbert Kymer (d 1463), Chancellor of the University, and physician to Humfrey Duke of Gloucester.
