Shelley’s Poetical Essay

This Treasure is paired with: Shelley’s Poetical Essay (Responses to war)

The committee soon known as Oxfam met for the first time in the University Church on 5 October 1942. It was founded in response to starvation behind the Allied blockade in occupied countries during World War II. The minutes from this first meeting include advice to proceed with caution, reflecting fears that food aid would fall into enemy hands and prolong the war. Oxfam has campaigned against poverty worldwide for over 70 years.
