Ordnance Survey map

Gough Map

This Treasure is paired with: Gough Map (Mapping Britain)

This and three other sheets covering Kent are the first maps issued by the Ordnance Survey for public use. The outbreak of war with France in 1793 prompted a defensive need for accurate maps of sensitive coastal areas, and the Board of Ordnance combined military and scientific surveys with the commercial expertise of the London map trade to produce these first general-purpose maps. The scale is one inch to one mile.

This Treasure isn’t currently on display in the Weston Library.
