These feathers marked with Morse code are from an enemy pigeon shot by Meinertzhagen in Egypt. Meinertzhagen was Chief Intelligence Officer to the Egyptian expeditionary force into Palestine, and his diaries include lively accounts of strategies to plant false information with the enemy. Here he notes that the pigeon’s message – spread over 15 feathers – was not of great military import.
