Mabel FitzGerald’s Pikes Peak expedition

‘Wandl’ ich in dem Wald des Abends’

This Treasure is paired with: ‘Wandl’ ich in dem Wald des Abends’ (Women overlooked)

‘Had a capital time up here’, FitzGerald wrote to her sister from Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains. She was there studying high altitude acclimatization with a group of male scientists. It was not considered appropriate for FitzGerald to share the men’s quarters, so she travelled alone through Colorado’s remote mining towns, gathering data from residents. Her resulting publication is cited to this day. Having studied at Oxford unofficially in the 1890s, she was belatedly recognised with an honorary degree in 1972, at the age of 100.

This Treasure isn’t currently on display in the Weston Library.
