Hebrew prayer book

Hebrew prayer book

This Treasure is paired with: Hebrew prayer book (Hebrew studies)

Asher ben Isaac copied and illuminated this siddur, or book of daily prayers, for the use of his family. Around half of all dated Hebrew manuscripts were produced by their user, but this example is unusual for the quality and richness of its illuminations. Forty-four musicians play their instruments in the illuminated borders, more than in any other Hebrew manuscript. They are a useful source for musical iconography, and perhaps reflect Asher’s own musical interests.
