Treasures of the Bodleian

This petition was one of a number which were produced by and for women from the early 1640s. Women were not then political citizens and their right to speak remained contested, but this petition suggests that they were not necessarily prepared to accept this state of affairs. Here, they advance political and religious justifications for their equality with men and refer explicitly to ‘reasons why their sex ought thus to petition’.
