Marriage of Heaven and Hell

This Treasure is paired with: Marriage of Heaven and Hell (Printing in relief)

The block-book was in some ways a precursor to Blake’s ‘infernal’ method of printing. Here, the white on the page corresponds with areas carved out from a block of wood, leaving a raised surface of words and pictures to be inked and printed together. Blake’s method was far more flexible, the strokes of a pen more subtle and elegant than a knife or gouge on wood, but a wood-block was more durable.
