Oscar Wilde’s bill and summons

Talbot photographs of Oxford

This Treasure is paired with: Talbot photographs of Oxford (19th-century Oxford)

This bill offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of Oscar Wilde during his student days at Oxford. Spiers & Son’s shop on the High Street provided him with 14 packs of playing cards over two years, as well as Venetian glassware, travelling cases and haircuts. This is one of three bills in the University Archives with a summons for Wilde to appear in the University’s Chancellor’s Court to make good his debts.

This Treasure isn’t currently on display in the Weston Library.
