Precious metals and stones, antique cameos, enamel and ivory work, and lavish embroidery adorn the covers of these religious books, the value of the texts within marked by the value of the binding that encloses them. Some, such as the German jewelled binding, were designed to be carried in processions and displayed during major church services.
