Suffragette movement material

1908

Printed Material

The items shown here were preserved as souvenirs of one the key events of the Suffragette movement – a mass rally in Hyde Park on 21 June 1908, attended by over 250,000 people and culminating at 5pm in a great shout, ‘Votes for Women!’ The Liberal government of H. H. Asquith was unmoved, and the first hunger strikes and window-smashing demonstrations took place in the following year. It was not until 1928 that women were finally entitled to vote on the same terms as men.

They are shown alongside a postcard supporting the Anti-Suffrage Movement, a political organization composed mainly of women.

What makes this a treasure?

These items represent such an important moment in history for women. I love the sense of solidarity and commitment you can see here. And you can't fail to be impressed by the sight of Mrs Drummond standing on a barge in the Thames addressing Parliament without the need for a megaphone...
