Harold Macmillan’s ‘Wind of Change’ speech
The most striking of all the impressions I have formed since I left London a month ago is of the strength of this African national consciousness. In different places it may take different forms. But it is happening everywhere. The wind of change is blowing throughout the Continent. Whether we like it or not, this growth of national consciousness is a political fact. We must accept it as a fact. Our national policies must take account of it.

MacMillan’s 1960 speech marked a startling recognition from his government of an ‘African national consciousness’ and the fact that the British Empire’s days were waning, as well as one of the first public condemnations of South Africa’s apartheid policies. It focused the world’s attention on African politics and the wave of independence movements sweeping the continent; it truly represents a part of British and international history.
