‘Free Nelson Mandela’ badges and box

1988

The popular campaign for the release of Nelson Mandela from prison gathered pace in 1988 – the year of his 70th birthday – under the slogan ‘Free Nelson Mandela’. It culminated in a concert at Wembley Stadium, broadcast around the world. Mandela was finally released in 1990. The image of Mandela printed on this box dates, of course, from before his arrest – it was only on his release that the world could see how he had aged during his twenty-seven years in prison.

What makes this a treasure?

I came across one of these badges while visiting a London flea market in 1999. It is now part of my pin badge collection. Thanks to your website I finally know for which occasion it was produced (besides the obvious campaign to free Nelson Mandela) and incredibly, former President, Nelson Mandela is still alive and going for 94 this year! Even the Nelson Mandela Foundation does not have this information on their website. Well done.
