An Apocalypse

Maria

1476

Manuscript

In a colophon written in Venetian dialect, the amateur scribe of this Apocalypse gives the date (1476) and her name (Maria). Page after page, Maria perseveres with the challenges that are met with apparent ease by professional scribes: regular letter forms, even line and letter spacing, and the lucid coexistence of text (at the top of the page) and accompanying commentary (in smaller writing below). She was evidently also responsible for the decorated initial, depicting the angel sounding the seventh trumpet.
